by Julie Stehr There has been a lot of pet love over the past year here at Barcellona. First Kelsey adopted her lovable (but a little crazy sometimes) chocolate lab Hally. Then Beth’s heart went out to a one-eyed kitty at the SPCA. Lesley recently adopted Cooper, a now two-month old kitten. She says her new home feels so much more ‘homey’ with him running around.
They join David and Rochelle who have also rescued animals. David adopted Teddy (the largest golden retriever ever) from Homeward Bound Retriever Rescue three years ago. And Rochelle has a 20-year-old grey tabby cat named Gladys who has lived a long, happy life off of the street where she was born. So the least I could do when a friend found a turtle wandering down a busy street was take him home. And now my family has a pet turtle named Leroy.
I did my research and created the perfect habitat for the little guy. A used 30-gallon tank on Craigslist (a steal at $25, I might add) was just the size to create the water-world he loves. I can’t be sure, but it seems to me that he must have been someone’s pet before he was abandoned (can you imagine? a water turtle walking down the middle of a street where there are no homes? definitely abandoned.) He sure is social - or maybe turtles are just social creatures? Anyway, the kids love him (although I think Rosie the dog is a little jealous) and my husband and I think he’s cute, if not cuddly. I couldn’t believe how good it felt to give Leroy a home. The best part is I’ve now officially joined the I Rescued An Animal club here at Barcellona.
With all the foreclosures and the hard hit economy, pet shelters are swamped with animals – and as Leroy proves, it’s all kinds of animals - not just cats and dogs. There are so many animals out there without someone to love them and provide them with a safe home. So if you have it in your heart to share your home with someone who doesn’t talk back, eats pretty much whatever you put in front of them and has a strict nap policy, please look into adopting an animal. I promise you won’t regret it.
