by Rochelle Barcellona It all started with a wallpaper border. Now, don’t judge. It was a really cool, very artsy French wall paper border that went along one wall in my daughter Maddie’s bedroom. She is into everything French. Well, she decided to redo her room from entirely pink to chocolate brown and robin’s egg blue. Since we had just pinked her room six months before, we told her no problem if she paid for it all herself. She purchased the paint and we started prepping. The wallpaper border would go with the new colors so we masked it off. Unfortunately, when we pulled off the mask, the border ripped in several places. My husband wasn’t happy and I knew I was going to have to figure out a solution. I ignored it for a week and then googled “wallpaper border removal” figuring it was going to involve toxic chemicals and a 20-step process. Imagine my surprise when the majority of search results came back saying “Mix vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Spray it on the wall and peel off the paper. The heavier the wallpaper, the more vinegar you should use.” Cool. I did it and it worked amazingly well. The border just peeled off the wall. I’d used vinegar and water to clean marble floors before and to set the colors on new clothes, but this little stripping technique was new.
So I did a little more googling to see what this wonder liquid could do for me. There is actually a website http://www.vinegartips.com that gives 1001 different tips for using vinegar with cooking (duh), gardening, cleaning, laundry, health, automotive and pets. Did you know that vinegar will make your dog’s coat shiny, keep frost off your car window, soothe a sunburn, get a mustard stain out of your clothes, deodorize your garbage disposal, kill weeds and freshen wilted veggies? Amazing! This is truly a wonder liquid. There are lots of recipes for natural cleaners using vinegar, lemon juice and baking soda on the web. This is just one site http://mlmgorilla.com/naturalcleaningrecipe/. Just think how much money you can save and the toxic chemicals that won’t be in your house if you use these natural products. Give it a try. The lemony fresh smell in your house can actually be from real lemons.
